  • ** EXPLORE ZANZIBAR ISLAND BY MOUNTAIN BIKE, MOTORCYCLE OR VEHICLE **

Zanzibar’s famous Stone Town, now a World Heritage Site, abounds with history. It has served as a base for explorers such as David Livingstone, has been the seat of power for Oman’s Sultans with their palaces and concubines and was a major centre for the slave trade. Alongside this are the magnificent tropical island beaches, with sparkling white sands and turquoise ocean surrounded by coral reefs. Spectacular diving and snorkelling is on offer in this laid back, African Island paradise. Let every day stresses melt away as you enjoy sundowners on a traditional Arab dhow or a beach massage. Situated off mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar’s main island, Unguja, measures only 85 by 35 kilometres. The island is fairly flat, and the distances manageable, making it ideal for cycling – a typical cycling day would include approximately 60 kilometres of cycling, mostly on reasonable roads. A backup vehicle follows the slowest cyclist and carries your luggage. For non-cyclists, there is no surcharge to travel by vehicle between destinations. Alternatively, motorcycles can be hired. Mountain bikes are available for hire in Zanzibar, but we recommend taking your own – an additional 10 kgs luggage allowance is given for bicycles on flights. From our budget to our luxury itineraries, all properties have been selected for their value for money and location. We will gladly tailormake itineraries to suit your requirements. Only 3½ hours’ flight from Johannesburg, Zanzibar is an ideal getaway for even a shorter visit. Meals and drinks are inexpensive in Zanzibar, and the variety of seafood incredible. Local dhows can be chartered directly from the owners for snorkelling excursions and sundowner cruises at very reasonable rates. Stone Town is a shopper’s paradise, offering anything from hand-carved wooden Zanzibar doors and furniture to the distinctive local Tingatinga artwork to fresh island spices.
